LESSON TO SHEARERS
STRIKERS TO BE REPLACED BY VOLUNTEERS MANY FINES IMPOSED Reed. 9.55 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. Shearing operations in a few country centres have heen suspended owing to strikes against the new award. The Graziers’ Association has decided to call for volunteers immediately to fill the positions of the shearers who have refused to work under the new award. The association has warned the recalcitrant men that their positions may be filled by volunteer workers. Seven shearers were prosecuted at Moree today for failure to comply with the terms of the award. Each was fined £5. These are regarded as test cases and the union intends to appeal. It is also announced that many more summonses will be issued against the strikers forthwith. RELIEF WORKERS’ STRIKE SYDNEY, Today. As the demands of the men engaged on suburban unemployment relief work were not met satisfactorily, those who had previously struck and resumed declared all relief work black and they later yesterday struck again. The police had to drive agitators away. The Minister of Public Works, Mr. E. A. Buttenshaw, has ordered all relief works to cease until Monday, when other gangs will be employed and rations for the strikers will be stopped.
