SHOULD APOLOGISE
LABOUR MEMBER CANED BY HIS PARTY STOLE MACE IN HOUSE Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. The Parliamentary Labour Party, by 90 votes to 2S, endorsed a resolution by the consultative committee recording strong disapproval of Mr. J. Beckett’s action in removing the Mace from the table in the House of Commons, an incident which brought discredit on the party and grossly affronted Parliament. The meeting decided to report the matter to the National Executive and to express the opinion that Mr. Beckett should apologise to the Commons. In an excited moment in the House of Commons last week, Mr. J. Beckett graaned the Mace from the table and rushed for the exit, shouting, “Mr. Speaker, this is a damned disgrace,” because ho disagreed with the proceedings in connection with a discussion that was being taken. The Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, in referring to the incident, said he noticed that Mr. J. Beckett had increased his offence by subsequent Press interviews. Nevertheless ho thought it would best suit the dignity of the House to leave the incident without further reference. The House might well expect Mr. Beckett to apologise.
