HAMILTON NEWS

The first general meeting of the Hamilton branch of the Junior Reform League was held on Monday evening, and the following offic€;rs were elected: Patron, Mr. J. A. Young, M.P.; president. Mr. C. F. Sherley; secretary, Mr. K. L. Munro; treasurer, Mr. C. Wright. Town and country interests combined in another enjoyable social on Monday evening. The function took the form of a complimentary dinner by the Waikato Farmers’ Union to the Rotary Club and businessmen. Speeches were given by Mr. J. Furniss, president of the Farmers’ Union; Dr. las, president of the Rotary Clifb; Mr. D. Seymour, president of the Chamber of Commerce; Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P.; and Mr. D. Bruce, a director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. During the last six weeks the trustees of the Herbert Smith Fund, Hamilton, have made 15 allocations for sports trophies, of a total value of £139, to organisations all over the Dominion. "Wintry weather was experienced in Hamilton yesterday, a biting southerly and frequent rain showers making conditions very unpleasant. For the most part farmers in the district are well supplied with feed, and stock generally is in good condition. ► * , Extensive preparations for the visit of the British Rugby team on August 2 are being made at Rugby Park by the Hamilton Rugby Union. Exisiting stands are being set back to provide for a ramp right around the field. A temporary stand to seat several hundred people is also being erected. * # * The new pumping plant in connection with the Borough Council’s £40,000 waterworks scheme is expected to be operating within a month. Good progress is being made with the high-level reservoir in Ruakiwi Street, which is expected to be ready by the end of January.
