ROUND-EUROPE FLIGHT
COMPETITORS FIND IT BUMPY ALOFT BUTLER LEADS AT MADRID Reed. 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Tuesday. In the round-Europe air reliability test, of 5,000 miles, Butler is leading. He was the first to reach Madrid, and was followed by Finat, Arrachart, and Thorn. An earlier message said Messrs. Thorn, Butler, and Miss Spooner arrived at Paris ahead of the other competitors. Extremely difficult flying weather, with violent rainstorms, gusts of wind, and low visibility, was encountered by the competitors who flew yesterday in stages from Calais to Bristol and London and back across the Chancel. All the seven British entrants, including Lady Bailey and Miss Spooner, were well up In the first flight. Some of the competitors had been weatherbound s,t Calais nearly all the morn ing. Mr. Butler, in his Gipsy Moth, was the first to reach Bristol. He said he had seldom experienced more violent bupiping. After him came Thorn Carberry, Miss Spooner, Andrews, Lady Bailey, and Captain Broad. French and German competitors fol lowed. Butler again led the departures for Heston Air Park, London, and was first away for St. Ingelvert; being closely followed by Polk (Germany) and Miss Spooner.
