HIGHER TOBACCO RATES OTHER RATES RAISED Below are details of the proposed duties that represent increases over tlio existing tariff other than by the surtaxes and by the additional 5 per cent. duty. Two rates of duty are given, the first being the British preferential rate and the second the general, or foreign, rate. The duties to bo superseded are similarly shown in parentheses: Class I.—Animals, Agricultural Products,. Foods and Groceries Barley—Up to and including August 31, 1930, 2s—2s a cental. On and after September 1, 1930; (a) To be used in the manufacture of beer, 2s — 2s a cental; (b) not to be used in the manufacture of beer, free —fre<* (new item). Onions, £l—£4 a ton ( £.1 —£1 10s a ton). Cocoa, also cocoa-beans roasted or crushed, 3d —6d a lb (3d —5d a lb). Coffee, roasted, 3d —6d a lb (3d —5d a lb). Apricots, cherries, grapes, medlars, nectarines, passion * fruit, peaches, plums, quinces, tomatoes, 2d—2d a lb (Id —Id a lb). Jams, jellies, marmalade and preserves, 2d —5d a lb on the actual or reputed weight, whichever is the greater (2d —4d a lb). Almond, or nut, pastes, meals and similar preparations, n.e.i., not being animal foods, 3d —6d a lb (3d —5d a lb). Pickles, 3s —6s a gallon (3s —4s 6d a gallon). , Sauces, chutney, soy and catsup, in vessels of 10 gallons capacity and under, 4s —8s a gallon (4s —6s a gallon). Class ll.—Tobacco Cigarettes, n.e.i.. 33s 9d—33s 9d a 1,000 (25s 6d—2ss 6d a 1,000). Cigarettes, exceeding in weight 241 b a 1,000, 13s 9d —13s 9d a lb (10s 6d—10s 6d a 1,000). Cigars. including the weight of every band, wrapper, or attachment, to any cigar, 15s—15s a lb (12s —12s a lb). Snuff, 3 ss—lsa a lb (12s —12s a lb). Tobacco, fine cut, suitable for the manufacture of cigarettes, 13s 3d —13s 3d a lb (10s —10s a lb). Tobacco, unmanufactured, for manufacturing purposes only, Is —Is a lb (2s —2s a lb). Class lll.—Spirits and Alcoholic Beverages Spirits and spirituous mixtures, whether in combination or in admixture with other ingredients or not: (1) When exceeding the strength of 40 per cent, of proof spirit, but not exceeding the strength of proof, 36s —36s a liquid gallon; (2) when exceeding the strength of proof, 36s —36s a proof gallon (allowance for under proof spirits abolished). Class IV.—Drugs: Chemicals; Surgical, Dental and Scientific Apparatus Medicinal preparations (except medicated wines) containing more than 50 per cent, of proof spirit. Is—2s a lb (Is —Is 6d a lb). Class V. Clothing, Drapery, etc. Apparel and ready-made clothing, n.e.i.; hosiery, 274 —50 per cent. (25 — 45 per cent.). Furs or imitation furs wholly or partly made up into apparel, rugs or other articles, fur trimmings and imitation fur trimmings, 274 —50 per cent. (25—45 per cent.). Class Vlll.—Fancy Goods. Musical Instruments, Sporting Goods and Photographic Goods. Precious stones and semi-precious stones, cut or uncut, if unmounted or unset, 5—5 per cent, (free —free). Watches. 20 —45 per cent. (20 —20 per cent.). Class IX.—Paper and Stationery Handbills, n.e.i.. circulars, programmes, play-bills, printed posters, trade catalogues, price lists and fashion plates, 6d —Is 6d a lb (6d —Is a lb). Class X.—Metals and Machinery Incandescent filament electric-lamp bulbs, not being peculiar to surgic.e.l use, and having, at the marked voltage. a power consumption; Not exceding 8 watts, Id —2 id a bulb (Id —2d a bulb). Exceeding 8 watts and not exceeding 80 watts. 3d—7 id a bulb (3d—v6d a bulb). Exceeding 80 watts and not exceeding 180 watts, 6d—ls 3d a bulb (6d —Is a bulb). Exceeding 180 watts —For the first 180 watts, 6d —Is 3d a bulb (6d — Is a bulb); for each additional 100 watts or fraction thereof, 3d—7id a bulb (3d —6d a bulb) Class Xl.—Vehicles Motor-vehicles, n-i.e., 10 per . cent.; and in cases where such motorvehicles are imported having bodies suited or designed for carrying passengers, an additional duty of 11£ per cent, on any such vehicle (inclusive of the body). For any vehicle (inclusive of the body) exceeding £2OO the body duty shall be: On £2OO of such value, 114 per cent-; and on the remainder of such value. 64 per cent.— 40 per cent; “body duty,” 164 percent.; duty on excess of £2OO, 83 per cent. On the previous scale the ad valorem duties were 10 per cent, and 35 per cent, under the British and general tariffs respectively. The body duties were 10 per cent, and 15 per cent., while the duties payable on an excess of £2OO were 5 per cent, and 74 per cent, respectively. Class Xll.—Greases, Oils, Paints, Polishes, Waxes, Etc. Motor-spirits, 7d—7d a gallon (4d—--4d a gallon). Oil, n.e.i., including mineral lubricating oil, 6d—ls a gallon (6d —Sd a gallon). Mixtures of mineral, or vegetable oils with each other, or with fish oils , or oils of animal origin, n.e.i., 6d—ls ' a gallon (6d —8d a gallon). Motor-spirits in vessels having a capacity of less than one gallon, 20 per cent., or 7d a gallon, whichever rate returns the higher duty—2o per cent., or 7d a gallon (20 per cent. —- 20 per cent.). Class Xll l.—-Timber, Woodenware, Furniture and Wickerware Timber, rough sawn, in pieces having a length of not less than 25 feet and minimum cross section of 150 square inches, 5s 6d —5s 6d a 100 superficial feet (3s —4s). N.e.i., 7s 6d 6d a 100 superficial feet (5s —ss). Timber sawn, dressed, 11s 6d—lls 6d a 100 superficial feet (7s 6d—7s 6d). Furniture and cabinetware, n.e.i., and other than metal, including chairs of wood with wicker, bamboo, or cane seats; billiard tables; mantelpieces, other than stone; sashes, wooden, plain or glazed, 25—50 per cent. (25 — 45 per cent.). Doors, wooden, plain or glazed, 30 per cent., or 4s a door, whichever rate returns the higher duty—ss per cent, or 7s 6d a door (new classification).
