LYRIC

TALKIES THIS EVENING This evening a popular Auckland theatre will open its doors as a talkie house. This is the Lyric, in Upper Symonds Street, a theatre which in the past has been a particular favourite with Aucklanders. Built originally for the presentation of vaudeville shows, the Lyric has excellent acoustics and should be ideal for talkies. During the past few days the theatre has been completely repainted and redecorated and equipped with the latest Western Electric talkie installation. For the opening programme on Wednesday the new management, Messrs. Prentice Bros., Ltd., lias secured a particularly fine programme, headed by the drama, “Slightly Scarlet.” Always identified with dramatic serious roles, Evelyn Brent has reached a high point in her brilliant career in her latest co-starring Paramount picture, “Slightly Scarlet.” In this picture, as in “Interference,” Miss Brent plays opposite Clive Brook. Miss Brent has been called “The Queen of Melodramas,” and “Slightly Scarlet” is a tense, dramatic, highly adventurous romantic melodrama. The story unfolds in handsome surroundings, with * one unusual twist after another. Miss Brent, famous for the beauty of her clothes, wears many new creations, which admirably set off her gorgeous dark beauty. There are several bright talkie supports. The box plans are now open. Last night the whole of the new programme was run through to test out the aparatus. It was very pleasing to note that every word was heard perfectly, in every seat in the theatre, that the equipment is working without a hitch and that everything points to a most successful opening performance.
