“VENGEANCE” Delightfully diverting and absorbing dratna of life in ah English trading post in West Africa will be seen at the Roxy Theatre today. It is “Vengeance,” a Columbia all-talking picture, with Jack Holt and Dorothy Revier, and directed by Archie Mayo. The story is well knit together, and the dialogue is to the point. Meadham, the man who has for several
years been in charge of the trading post, has asked the London office for relief. In answer to this request, Charles Summers is sent out. He arrives with his young and charming wife. He is censured for his pool judgment in bringing her to such an ungodly place. An intense antagonism develops between Meadham and Summers because of Summers’s poor judg
rnent in handling - the natives. Summers’s wife breaks under the strain of her husband’s cruelty and the ravages of the tropical climate. She appeals to Meadham. They fall in love. The complications that result from this situation complete the action of one of the most absorbing stories of the tropics ever screened. The stars and the supporting cast consisting of Phillip Strange and George Pearce render skilful performances. An interesting programme of short talkie featurettes will also be presented. Dr. Fu Manchu, the wily Chinese murderer of Sax Rohmer’s famous stories, is alive, and will be seen again on the screen in ‘’The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu,” an all-talking adaptation of the sequel story. Warner Oland plays the title role, and O. P. Heggie, Jean Arthur, Neil Hamilton, and William Austin are featured in the cast.
