WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETINGS THROUGHOUT THE PROVINCE A meeting of the Glen Eden Institute was held last- week, Airs. Iluyton presiding. An address on “Buying New Zea-land-made Goods” was given by Miss Ellen Melville. The speaker stressed the importance of purchasing New Zealand productions as an aid In the solution of the unemployment problem. Some lantern slides relating to the subject were shown. The hostesses were Mesdames Hill and Bond. WOODLANDS BRANCH The Woodlands Women’s Institute met last week, Mrs. Mulhern presiding over a good attendance. The roll call, “Nursery Rhymes,” caused much amusement. Musical items were contributed by Mrs. J. Armstrong. The hostesses were Mesdames Pilkington. Maxwell, Mulhern and Hollard. MEETING AT BIRKDALE Mrs. Gilpin presided at a well attended meeting of the Birkdale Women’s Institute, held recently. Mrs. Tate, of Greenhithe, gave an address on public speaking, which she followed by elocutionary items. Items were also given by Miss V. Irwin, Mrs. Cain and Mrs. Adams. The hostesses were Mesdames Dennen, Dickson, Gilpin and Hayman. DEMONSTRATION OF RAFFIA WORK The monthly meeting of the Raglan Women’s Institute was held on Friday, afternoon. Mrs. A. L. Pegler presided over a good attendance of members. After business matters had been discussed, community singing was held, Mrs. C. Gilmour acting as pianiste. Mrs. F. Bernard gave an interesting demonstration on raffia work. Miss A. Gilmour sang two songs, Airs. C. Gilmour playing her accompaniment. The hostesses for the afternoon were Airs. R. Cowley, Airs. C. Gray and Miss L. Hill. PLAY READING AT GREENHITHE At the monthly meeting of the Greenhithe Women’s Institute two plays by Sir James Barrie- were read. In the first, “Seven Women,” the parts were taken by Alesdames Sexton, AlcCallum, Churchhouso and Corlett. In the second, “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals,” Mesdames Newman, Hockenhull. Blakeway. Tate, Misses Crozier and Waite took part. Mrs. Tate, who had arranged the plays, gave a short talk on the characteristics of Sir James Barrie. Allss • Crozier presided at the business section of the gathering, to which remits for the bi-annual conference of Auckland Federated Institutes and names of delegates were submitted. Mrs. Arnold and Miss Waite were the hostesses. HOBSONVILLE BRANCH The Hobsonville Woman’s Institute met on Thursday in the Public Hall. Mrs. W. Ockleston presiding over a good attendance. The Rev. Jasper Calder gave a most interesting address on his work in the Auckland City Mission and the appeal to members for clothing for the mission met with a good response. At the business meeting which followed Mrs. W. Ockleston and Mrs. Parry were appointed as delegates to the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes. The hostesses were Mrs. Smlthers and Mrs. Stacpoole.
