“TOLD A TALE”
PRISON FOR WOMAN When Mary Hodson ran shift of money she kept the wolf from the door by borrowing sums of money from business people on the strength of a story that she had lost her purse. Hodson, a cook, aged 42, appeared at the Police Court today on six charges of obtaining money totalling £7 17s 6d. On two occasions she had stated that she had lost her purse and on the other four occasions she had represented herself as a reputable resident of Awanui North. She pleaded guilty to all charges. “She is only back from the Island a few months,” said Chief-Detective Hammond. "She has been drinking around the town. She was at one time employed as a housekeeper at Awanui North and got the idea to use it as a means of getting money. On one occasion she went to a dentist, got an impression taken for false teeth and then borrowed money by stating she had lost her purse.” Mr. Hunt; On the first two charges she is sentenced to four months on each, the sentence to be cumulative. On the other four counts she is convicted and discharged.
