RAIL AND MOTOR SERVICES

NAPIER, TAUPO AND ROTORUA One of the most important steps forward in the co-operation of motor and rail transport ever effected in New Zealand has been made in Hawke’s Bay, as a result of which travellers will be able to leave the railway at either Rotorua or Napier and, still using their original rail ticket, proceed overland via fi'aupo or Gisborne by motor-car prior to joining the railway service again at either station.

This is the outcome of conferences that have taken place between Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager, and Mr. G. G. Stew'art, acting-commercial manager, of the New Zealand Railways, and Mr. D. F. McCarthur, representing the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company, Napier, and Mr. L. C. Ryan, representing the R.M. Transport Company, of Rotorua.

This arrangement commenced yesterday, and will not only serve as a link between Napier and Rotorua, via either the Taupo or Gisborne roads, but will also jive travellers from the south alternative routes by which they can comfortably reach the thermal districts.

The motor service companies concerned will act as booking agents at their branches at Napier, Wairoa, Gisborne, Opotiki, Whakatane, Rotorua and Taupo, and their services will practically become integral parts of the Dominion’s railway system. For this service there will be used an eight-cylinder Cadillac of the latest design with a New Zealand-built body, making provision for nine passengers and ample luggage room at the rear. Upholstered in genuine leather, it is a striking example of New Zealand craftsmanship, and provides the utmost in riding comfort for its passengers.
