VACANT MAORI SEAT
UNITED PAKTY MAY HAVE Candidate QUEST FOR A NOMINEE Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Today. If the United Party can find a suitable candidate, there will be an official nomination for the vacant Maori seat. The claim of the Right Hon. J. G. Coates that there was an understanding between Sir Apirana Ngata and Sir Maui Pomare in the matter of their not being opposed in either electorate by official candidates from the rival party is revealed to be perfectly true. In' return for a clear field, Sir Apirana Ngata arranged to support Sir Maui in his own electorate, the agreement being between the two as leaders of the Maori race. However, when the United Party came into being, the reason for Sir Maui not being opposed in 1928 was that there was no suitable candidate available, and the task of discovering one proved too great. The agreement, being considered to have existed between individuals, and not parties, is now at an end.
