About 130 candidates from the Hamilton and Frankton parishes were confirmed by Dr. E. A. Anderson, formerly Bishop of Armidale, Australia, at St. Peter’s Cathedral on Sunday. The bishop said he had never confirmed a larger number of candidates. Most of the confirmees were prepared by Dean Barnett. ♦ * • Nearly 100 members of the Auckland Tramping Club spent an enjoyable day in Hamilton Sunday. The weather was showery, but did not militate against the success of the trip. * m • Keen rivalry is being shown in the Frankton queen carnival, which closes on August 4. The position of the candidates is: Miss M. Nelson (Suburban); Miss C. Buckland (Sports); Miss M. Carpenter (Country); and Miss J. Gilflllan (Business). * * * In connection with the controversy in Wanganui, regarding the cost of borough administration, a comparison of returns shows that Hamilton is governed cheaper than any other town or city in the Dominion. New Plymouth is second on the list, and Auckland third. * * # A large meteor in the north-west sky was seen by Mr. C. L. Mac Diarmid, of Hamilton, when returning from Te Kuiti about 8.15 on Sunday night. There was an unusually large attendance at the Hamilton Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening, when a contingent of Te Aroha orphans, led by Mr. R. G. Spence, was the guest of the evening. At a large and enthusiastic meeting of young men on Saturday night, it was decided to form the Hamilton Gliding Club, the first of its kind in New Zealand. The following officers were elected: Patron, Captain R. R. Money; president, Mr. T. H. Chester; secretary-treasurer, Mr. W. Jordan, jun.; committee, Messrs. J. Hunter. C. Lewis. O. Davies, and Dold. The three-miles junior championship for the Gilchrist Rose Bowl, run bv the Hamilton Harriers’ Club. on Saturday, resulted: N. F. Roberts, 1; J. Ladd. 2: F. Molloy, 3. A better year is revealed in the annual report of the Hamilton branch of the Y.M.C.A. An increased membership is shown, although greater public support is required to stabilise the finances. The membership of 319 at the end of June. 1930, was as follows: Junior. 125; young men, 32: seniors, 52: sustaining. 110. Although the new courthouse outwardly appears to be completed, there is still much interior work to be accomplished by the contractors, and it is doubtful if it will be opened for business this year.
