PRAISE FOR CHAIRMAN A tribute to the energy of Mr. J. Itentoul, chairman of the New Zealand Honey Export Hoard, was paid in an editorial in a recent issue of the “Beekeepers’ Gazette,” published in Ireland. The article states that Irish beekeepers will be several hundred pounds poorer this season as a result of Mr. Rentoul’s recent visit to that country, and extols his go-getting business methods as worthy of emulation by Irish beekeepers. LONDON PRODUCE MARKET The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated July 19, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: Tallow. —The spot market is quiet and steady with fair demand at auction, 675 packages being offered and 444 sold. Present quotations are:—Mutton: Fine, 31s a cwt; fair to good. 26s to 295; dark to dull, 24s to 255. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 27s 6d to 355; fair to good, 24s 6d to 27s Cd; dark to dull, 23s to 245. Mixed: Fair to good. 24s to 275: dark to dull, 23s to 245. Gut. etc., 20s to 13s. Hemp.—The Manila market is easier under selling pressure and limited support. “J” grad© sold at £22 10s for August-October shipment, and £22 15s for September-November shipment. Sisal: The market is quiet but steady. Quotations for first grade fair average quality are £24 15s for afloat and June-August shipment, and £25 for July-September and AugustOctober shipment. Mexican sisal: It is reported that 28,000 bales have been lost by the fire in Progreso, but the market is not greatly affected by the reports as present stocks there are 300,000 bales. For good white the nominal quotation is £26 15s. New Zealand: Tho market continues dull and no first hand sales are reported. High fair is offered at £34 spot, Antwerp, but there are no buyers. Wool. —The sale continues with prices better. Merino moved against buyers and prices for other sorts are fully maintained. BUTTER AND CHEESE Merchants report receipt of overseas cables as follow: Joseph Nathan and Co., from Messrs. Trengrouse and Nathan, Ltd.. London: “Butter, 1365; market quiet. Cheese, white, 595; coloured, 83s; market firm. Leonard and Son, Ltd., from A. C. Rowson, London, dated July 18.— “Cheese, New Zealand, white, 775; coloured, 82s. The market is very firm, and tho demand is improving. Prices have an upward tendency. Butter: New Zealand, first grade, 1345; finest, 135 s to 1365. The demand is steady, and tho market steady. The outlook is uncertain, though it looks fairly good.”
