SHAMROCK V. SETS OUT

SAILS FROM ENGLAND TO U.S.A. FOR BIG RACE CHALLENGE FOR AMERICA’S CUP LONDON, Saturday. Thousands of people turned out at Portsmouth today to witness the departure of Shamrock V. for New York, where her owner, Sir Thomas Lipton, hopes she will capture the America’s Cup. The crew is quietly confident that Sir Thomzte will achieve his life’s ambition. The contest for the America’s Cup is to start on September 13 from a point nine miles southeast of Brenton lightship off Long Island, and, if possible, races are to be continued daily until one of the competing yachts has won four out of seven. The yacht which does that will be declared the winner. The first race will be 15 miles to windward and back, or to leeward and back if a windward course is not possible; the next will be sailed over a triangular course with legs of nine miles each. Subsequently races will be to windward —or leeward—and triangular alternately.
