RANGITATA’S WORK IN MID-ATLANTIC

THE new motor-ship Rangitata, en route from New Zealand, to England, effected a timely rescue in mid-Atlantic,

when it picked up the passengers and crew of the burning German steamer Targis. The ship stood by while the Targis filled and sank.

United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright, Reed. 10.10 a.m. BERLIN, Friday. The owners have been advised that the steamer Targis was burnt in midAtlantic east of Bermuda. The Rangitata rescued the whole of the passengers and crew. The Rangitata, when homeward bound from New Zealand, sighted the German steamer on fire in three holds, the coal bunker, the engine room anti the boiler room. She hastened to the rescue aud

stood by at the captain’s request until the Targis filled and sank. The Targis was a steel steamer of 5,952 tons gross, owned by Xorth German Lloyd Line. She was built in 1915 at Einswarden by J. Frerich and Company. She had previously been named Rijperkerk, Netley Abbey and Wolfram. The motor-liner Rangitata, which rescued the passengers and crew of th« burning Targis, is one of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s three new ships built for the SouthamptonDominion run. She is now on her regular trip from Wellington for London and Southampton, carrying passengers, mails and produce from New Zealand.
