NOTABLE MONTH
Three Big Projects Finish in September MILESTONES IN CITY’S HISTORY September will be a notable month In the progress of Auckland. The Harbour Board's Western reclamation will be completed. The new railway station will be finished. Passenger trains will be using the new route via the waterfront for the first time. Work on the Western reclamation has progressed steadily since it was started on January 6, 1928. Spoil from the City and from the dredge working in St. Mary’s Bay has been poured into the area until it has been brought to the required level and solidity for commercial purposes. Spoil totalling more than 800,000 cubic yards has filled this area of 25 acres, which will shortly be another fine asset for the Harbour Board and another source of assured revenue. A wide thoroughfare will run through the middle of the area with smaller roads leading off it from either side. It is expected that the oil companies will occupy the larger part of the Western reclamation which is excellent for such purposes. Later in the year, when the viaduct from Quay Street is completed, the whole of the reclaimed areas in the vicinity of Freeman’s Bay will be linked directly with the City and the transport of oil direct from the steamers will be accelerated. DOUBLE SET OF RAILS Provision has been made on the viaduct for a double set of rails, and in addition to this there will be splendid accommodation for all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. It is interesting to note that when the viaduct is finished there will be a direct route along the whole of the Auckland waterfront from Freeman’s Bay to St. Heliers. This will be one of the finest roads of its kind in the Dominion. Meanwhile the new station Is rapidly nearing completion and workmen are now engaged in adding the last touches to this magnificent structure. The tram tracks linking the direct route to the station entrance with Beach Road are being put down and the approaches to the station are being finished. ■ The railway line along the waterfront to Westfield is finished except for a few minor details, hut everything will be ready for September, when it is expected that the whole of the new system will be operating.
