Fire practically gutted the fiveroomed cottage, owned and occupied by Mrs. Alex Bird, at Mangawhare this afternoon. Its valuable furniture and the family’s clothing and effects were ruined. The Dargavilie Fire Brigade responded to the alarm and did well, considering it was greatly hampered by .the distance it j had to take the hose.
