FAIRY LORE
A fairy hasn’t got a gem, Nor yet a common stone: She hasn’t got a single thing That she can call her own; Not any music, any song, Nor silver stars that shine; She cannot to another say, “That’s yours, but this is mine.” To us, she says, the grasses talk, To us the blackbirds call; The treasure of our fairy world. Belongs to one and all. We’re very, very wealthy folk, Yet not one goes alone With riches hidden anywhere That she can call her own. She says, “We have no money here; We haven't got a thing That you could buy for guinea gold And hide beneath a wing.” —Gloria Rawlinson, aged 11.
