PLAZA AND TIVOLI

“THE BIG PARTY” New York, from river to river, serves as the background for a surprising amount of entertainment in “The Big Party,” the Fox Movietone production, which is now being shown at both the Plaza and Tivoli Theatres. In its swift and amusing progress the film takes us from cheap nickle-and-dime stores to ultra-ultra modiste’s establishments, from dingy tenements to the most luxurious apartments, from 50-cent-table d’hote cafes to glittering night clubs, while the romance of the slangy but lovable shop girl and her window-trimming boy friend is carried out to everyone’s complete satisfaction. John Blystone, the director who has given 'us such noteworthy pictures as “The Sky Hawk,” has again scored with his sympathetic and human treatment of his characters and his deft telling of his story against its kaleidoscopic settings. Dixie Dee, whose blonde beauty won her general approbation in her portrayals with “Why Deave Home?” and “Let's Go Places,” gives a splendid performance in this, her first leading role. Sue Carol and Waiter Catlett are splendid in the other featured parts. The supporting cast is perfectly chosen, headed by such favourites as “Whispering” Jack Smith and Richard Keene. Douglas Gilmore, Charles Judels and Dorothy Brown also enact noteworthy roles. Catlett and Judels are especially funny as the two bickering and wife-dodging partners and Harlan Thompson’s story and dialogue is both clever a.nd entertaining. At both theatres bright supporting programmes are also being shown. EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS The annual exhibition of paintings by the group known as “The Everhopufuls’- will bo held in the Vulcan Buildings. Vulcan Dane, from next Tuesday to next Saturday inclusive. TOWN HALL ORGAN RECITAL The programme for the recital in the Town Hall tomorrow afternoon will be selected from works by Bach, Smart and Tours. Mr. Maughan Barnett will also play, Massenet’s “Aragonai.se” and Schubert’s “Serenade.” CLICK CLACK CABARET The Click Clack Cabaret will hold a big “Football Visitors’ ” night tonight, when there will be special attractions in honour of the occasion.
