SEAMEN PROTEST
CHARTERING OF FOREIGN VESSELS PLEA FOR NEW ZEALANDERS Press Association WELLINGTON, Friday. An emphatic protest against the chartering by the Government of foreign vessels in the phosphate, fruit and hardware trades was made to the Minister in Charge of the Cook Islands, Sir Apirana Ngata, by representatives of the Seamen’s Union today. It was stated that seamen on these vessels were lower paid and worked under conditions that woufd not be tolerated by the Dominion. There w;is a large number of seamen out of work and he was sure the Minister would agree that it was foolish policy not to employ New Zealand men. Sir Apirana Ngata promised to investigate tho whole position and said lie would place tho position before Cabinet.
