THE BATTLEFIELD—ALL EYES ON EDEN PARK!
Like many other sports grounds in the main centres cf New Zealand, Eden Park was originally a swamp. In the early days the present playing area was thickly studded with clumps of rushes and raupo. It was a happy hunting ground for pukekos, and cels abounded in the stagnant water. Even some of the present-day Rugby “heads” can remember when it was a favourite spot for rabbitshooting expeditions.
Eden Park’s history as a Rugby ground is a comparatively short one. It was first known as the Kingsland Cricket Ground and it was not til! 1914 that the Auckland Rugby Union started playing matches there. Prior to that, the traditional headquarters of Auckland Rugby were ■ Potter’s Paddock, at Epsom, where the trotting grounds now are. The Auckland v. Britain match at the “Pad- ; dock” in 1904 drew a crowd of nearly ■ 22,000. .
