MORE BUTTER SOLD
BIG INCREASE IN JUNE YEAR’S TOTAL GROWING More than twice as much butter was shipped from New Zealand in June this year than in the same month of 1029, accounting for half the increase of 4 per cent, in butter exports this season. The total exports in butter since August of last year were 88,509 tons, compared with 75,321 tons for the 1929 season. In June the total was 6,353 tons, an increase of 3,482 over June of last year. During the month 5,702 tons of cheese went overseas, being three tons less than in the same month of 1929, but bringing the season’s total up to SOB tons more than formerly. The butter exports in June went principally to England. 3,284 tons, making the season’s total 63,954 tons. Canada received ,2,859 tons, a total of 23,068 being recorded. Of the other 210 tons sent abroad this season. Panama took 120. Seventy-eight per cent, of June’s export to the United Kingdom was on consignment, the remainder being sold f.o.b. Nearly all of the cheese export also went to England, the June total being 5,691 and the season’s total 77,866 tons. Canada dlcl not import any cheese and Australia’s share was only one ton, other countries absorbing 10 tons, but over the whole season Canada has taken 146 and Australia 15 tons respectively. Of the English import in June, 72 per cent, was consigned and the remainder .sold f.o.b. Dominion’s Lead On figures for the six months ended June, New Zealand takes second place in exports of butter to the United Kingdom, but has an undisputed lead in the cheese line. The Dominion sent considerably more cheese than butter to England and her total dairy product exports of 106,154 tons were greatly in advance of her nearest competitor, Denmark, which sent to England 56,556 tons of butter, but no cheese. Australia and the Argentine were next, but the former was less than one-third of Now Zealand’s total.
During June the United Kingdom absorbed 34,148 tons of butter and 10,332 tons of cheese, an increase of 3,622 and a decrease of 606 tons respectively. Following are tables of Britain’s imports* in butter and in cheese for the six months ended June of each of the last three years:—
