MAN GAOLE6 FOR SMASHING WOMAN’S SKULL PLEA OF SELF-DEFENCE BRISBANE, Wednesday. An Italian, Giovanni Maggiori, was convicted of the manslaughter of Mrs. Margaret Furst at Applethorpe and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Accused's defence was that the woman attacked him and he accidentally killed her in self-defence. The woman, who conducted an orchard at Applethorpe, Southern Queensland, was last seen by the local postmistress on February G when she called for her mail. After that the postmistress was not able to communicate with her by telephone. A search was made by the police. They found a parrot and bulldog on the verge of starvation at the house, which was deserted. They secured black trackers and the garden was dug up. Finally, Mrs. Furst’s body was found four feet below the surface of the ground. Pier skull had been fractured.
