Women's Institutes

First Meeting, y at Paengaroa

The first monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Paengaroa hall recently, Mrs. J. S. Black presiding. The aims and objects of the institute were explained by Mrs. Withy and Mrs. Caverhill, two members of the Matata institute. Mrs. Caverhill also gave a demonstration on the making of toy animals. Tea was served, and a programme for next meeting was planned by the newly-formed committee. The hostesses were Mesdames "Wilton, Xaylor, and Black. WAIOTAHI BRANCH The Waiotahi Institute met last week, Mrs. Toone, president, being in the chair. After ordinary business had been disposed of, Mrs. W. Jeffery read a report of the group meeting at Whakatane, which several members had attended. This was followed by a health hint, “Roll Call,” to which most members contributed. A collection of Tongan curios was shown by Miss Abbot. MEETING AT WAERENGA. The Waerenga Institute met on Thursday, when Mrs. Hunter, president, opened the meeting with an account of the various activities of the Pukekohe and Tuakau institutes, which she had recently visited. Mrs. Rodala. of Te Kauwhata, gave an interesting demonstration on cake-icing. The afternoon was concluded with community singing. The hostesses were Mesdamea Carley, Chambers, Cole, and Boot. MISS MELVILLE AT TE ATATU. An open meeting of the Te Atatu Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Church recently. Mrs. Chadwick presided. After various business matters had been dealt with. Miss Melville, on behalf of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association, gave a most interesting and helpful address on “Buying Xew Zealand-made Goods,” A number of lantern slides were shown, demonstrating the various industries in operation in the Dominion. A hearty vote of thanks was given Miss Melville. Supper was served by members of the institute. SOCIAL EVENING AT TUAKAU The Tuakau branch of the Women's Institute entertained their husbands and friends at a social evening held in the Tuakau Town Hall on Friday. A large gathering, including visitors from Buckiand and Pukekohe, were present and thoroughly enjoyed the programme, which consisted of dances, competitions, games and songs. A very amusing play was staged by the following members of the institute: Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Steer, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Wood bridge. Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Prescott, Mrs. Morrow, Mrs. Morgan. Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Asher. Solos were sung by Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. McGill. A men’s competition was won by Mr. J. Clark, and a women’s competition by Mrs. Allan, of Harrisville. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Fulton, Airs. Morgan, Airs. Jones and Airs. Alorow. Air. and Airs. Bush supplied the dance music. RAXGITIIII MAORI BRANCH The RaAgitihi Afaori Associated Women’s Institute held a meeting on Thursday evening. Mrs. Burt presided over a good attendance. On the resignation of the president. Airs. Xebb was officially elected president of the institute. Five new members enrolled. Preparations for the coming Bay of Plenty group meeting, to be held at Whakatane, were discussed and some

of the members brought some of their Alaori arts and crafts to be exhibited at the conference. A rehearsal of poi dancing and singing followed. Two girl visitors sang a couple of Alaori duets, which were enthusiastically encored. Supper was served by the hostesses, Misses J. Freeman, T. Alinarapa and A. Waretini. \ * * AIEETIXG AT OPOTIKI About GO members of the Opotiki Women’s Institute met at the Farmers’ social room last Friday evening. Airs. Main, president, was in the chair and welcomed the visiting Woodlands members. An invitation was received from the Waiotahi Institute to the meeting on August 13. Airs. Alain read a report of the group meeting at Whakatane. Jt was decided to have a banquet to celebrate the second birthday of the institute. Alatron Roberts gave a very instructive demonstration and talk on first aid methods. Mrs. Scott, assisted by Aliss J. Kelly, gave a most amusing sketch, “Allotments,” and Mrs. Rowe and Mi6s B. Kelly were responsible for very pleasant vocal items. The hostesses for the evening were Alesdames Wingate, Wolfenden, A. Xeilson. Alatron Roberts and Aliss Shalfoon.

HEALTH OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

WAIMARINO BRANCH OF PLUNKET SOCIETY The usual monthly meeting of the Royal Xew Zealand Society of the Health of Women and Children, Wainiarino Branch (Inc.), was held at the Plunket Rooms, Miro Street, Ohakune. on Wednesday. A letter was received from Air. F. Langstone, M.P., enclosing a copy of a letter which he sent to the Wanganu* Hospital Board pointing out the desirability of establishing a cottage hospital in Ohakune, particularly for maternity cases. A further letter was received from Air. Langstone enclosing a reply from the Wanganui Hospital Board in which it was stated that the members of the were sympathetic toward the suggestion, and that the matter would be held over for further consideration.

Those present were: —Airs. Carven (president), Airs. Pearce, Airs. Aliilard, Airs. Jordan, Airs. Hussey, Airs. Devlin. Airs. Leahy, Airs. Thomas, Airs. Fetzer (secretary).

COMING-OF-AGE

PLEASANT MORRINSVILLE PARTY To celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter Nancy, Mr. and Airs. J. L. Arndt gave a very enjoyable party at their home in Allen Street, Alorrinsville, on Saturday evening. The rooms were attractively decorated, with bowls of violets, and a jolly {.ime was spent with games and competitions. Airs. Arndt, in a frock of almond green marocain, received her guests. Miss Nancy Arndt wore cyclamen taffeta with hip bow. The guests included:—Airs. A. Lawrence, Airs. Millan (Te Aroha), Aliases 11. Arndt, M. Arndt, V. ArcPherson, D. Dike. B. Smyth, G. Meek, D.
