TELEGRAM DELIVERY

SYSTEM IN RURAL DISTRICTS The system of delivering telegrams in the country districts was criticised at a meeting of the Auckland Provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union last evening. In replying to a previous letter from the union, the acting-chief postmaster in Auckland, Air. J. J. Kearney, stated that the regulations governing letter telegrams did not permit of their being delivered until the first postman’s delivery on the day following that of lodgment. Where there was no postman’s delivery the telegrams were held until the next morning, when they were delivered over the counter or dispatched by rural contractor with other correspondence. It was therefore possible that at places where there was no daily rural service, two or three days might elapse before the letter telegram reached its destination. According to Air. R. H. Feisst, the present regulations were penalising persons who lived in a district not served by a daily delivery. It was decided to approach the Post-master-General, the Hon. J. B. Donald, with a view to having the existing regulations amended.
