‘‘NO LOAFERS WANTED’’ ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL When the Alayor of Onehunga, Air. E. Alorton, suggested at Alonday’s meeting of the Borough Council that application be made to the Government for a subsidy for relief work at the! regulation wage of 14s a day, Cr. S. Vella wanted an assurance that only the best workmen were to be employed. He said that it would be an expensive job unless men were engaged who woLild not loaf. The council decided to expend £1,500 on Selwyn and Hill Streets and Alount Smart Road, and apply for the regulation £2 for £1 subsidy. On this basis the Alayor, explained, the council would bear £BSB of the estimated costs and the Government subsidj r on labouronly would amount to £642. A specification submitted by the Alount Roskill Road Board for the formation and tar-sealing of Hillsborough Road was approved. The council at its last meeting agreed to make a grant of £IOO toward this work. The Onehunga Association Football Club was given permission to make a charge for admission to the recreation reserve on Saturday, August 2. The Alayor, Air. E. Alorton, and Cr. F. W. Alount joy were appointed to represent the council as witnesses before the forthcoming, Railway Commission in regard to the retention of the Onehunga-Penrose branch railway line. The district medical health officer reported that the periodical analysis of the borough’s water supply had proved satisfactory. Crs. S. Vella and J Pilkington were appointed the council’s delegates to attend the conference of local bodies convened by the Auckland City Council to consider the question of establishing a commercial airport for the metropolis. The chairman of the Waterworks Committee, Cr. W. C. Hill, reported that the new area water mains reticulated had been completed at a cost of £3,000. The Finance Committee was requested to bring down a report within ono month on the question of the establishment of a sickness relief fund for the outside permanent staff. Owing to complaints regarding larrikinism on the railway wharf reserves on Sundays, the town clerk was instructed to request the police to take action. The application of the Merrilands Ratepayers’ Association that the houses in that area be numbered and street name posts erected is to receive attention as soon as possible.
