LOAN POLL TO LAPSE
NEWMARKET’S DECISION EQUAL VOTING RECORDED No further poll will be taken by the Newmarket Borough Council on the proposal to raise a loan of £29,000 for acquiring a property in Station Street to widen the roadway, which was submitted to the ratepayers last Thursday ancl for Avhioh voting for and against was equal. This decision was reached at a special meeting of the council yesterday morning. “As far as I know the result was unique,” said the Mayor, Air. S. Donaldson, in moving that a further poll should be taken in the near future. There was a feeling in the district that the question should be settled definitely by the ratepayers. The fairest solution would be the submission of the proposals afresh at the forthcoming poll for the drainage loan and fire protection scheme, when the cost would be negligible. Air. R. Philpot seconded the motion. Both the Mayor and the Town Clerk, Air. H. Wilson, stated that there was no legal bar to resubmitting the proposal, but Air. W. Jaffrey was not satisfied and moved an amendment that the question be deferred for 12 months. This lapsed for want of a seconder. The Alayor’s motion was lost by four votes to five, the Mayor and Alessrs. Philpot, C. Mountain and W. Hughes alone voting for the proposal.
