ISSUED “DUD” CHEQUE
LABOURER GIVEN SIX MONTHS PAWNED A BICYCLE ALSO When Cyril Albert Hoskin wanted a little money he simply wrote a valueless cheque, bought a few goods anJ pocketed tlie change. But he was arrested and appeared in the Police Court today. Hoskin, a labourer, aged 51, was charged with obtaining £2 3s 9d in goods and £8 6s 3d in cash from Collin Raings, of F. Prime and Company, Dy means of a valueless cheque. He was further charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £lO 10s, the property of F. R. Hutchinson and Company. He pleaded guilty, and through Mr. Noble, elected to be dealt with summarily. “Last June Hoskin bought a bicycle from Hutchinson's for £lO 10s on the hire-purchase system,” said ChiefDetective Hammond. “He converted the invoice into a receipt and pawned it for £2 10s. Later, he got hold of a cheque, book and wrote a cheque, cashing it at a hardware shop, where he bought a few tools and received about £8 in change. He has & lengthy list and was declared an haDi tual criminal in 1927. He is now out on licence.’* Mr. Noble said it seemed hopeless for accused to go straight. “He comes of good people/* said counsel. “He has caused them great trouble. He informs me that he can make restitution of the amount.” On the charge of issuing a valueless cheque, Hoskin was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by Mr. F. IC Hunt, S.M. On the second charge he was convicted and discharged.
