“TOWN HALL TIME”
CLOCK “GOES WRONG” INTENTIONALLY
“Twelve o’clock? That’s wrong.” Thus hundreds of City workers who arrived in the main street; after 5.30 this morning and glanced at the Town Hall clock. The impression that “that’s wrong” was exactly what it was intended to convey.
Tlie periodical replacement of the wire ropes which carry the weights to move the “doings” was being carried out and the clock had to be stopped. At half-past eight the hands were altered to point to 12 p’clock. “The idea of putting them forward some hours instead of leaving them where they are stopped is that people will see immediately that the time by this clock is not correct. Thus, those seeing the clock indicating 8.30 when the time is really 8.45, would alter their watches to coincide with Town Hall time," said Mr. John Murrell, who for 13 years has been “doctor” to the town clock, to a Sun representative. “But when we advance the hands by some hours, no one is deceived and people look elsewhere for the correct time.”
The new wire ropes were ready for use at 11 o’clock and the hands then again registered the real “Town Hall time-** .
