ROUND OF HOTELS
FISHMONGER HAD BIG DAY OUT George William Jackson is evidently a man with luxurious tastes. On July 3. he hired a taxi-driver to run him around the town and call at several hotels, but when it came time to pay for his fun, the taxi-driver found that his passenger was a “dud.” Jackson, a fishmonger. 30, appeared at tho Police Court today, charged with obtaining credit by fraud inasmuch as he had. on July 3, incurred a debt of £2 10s for taxi hire with Daniel Augustus Lindsay. Mr. MeLiver, who appeared for Jackson, entered a plea of not guilty. Daniel Augustus Lindsay, a taxidriver. said he had met Jackson in a City hotel about 1.30 o'clock on July 3. Witness picked up a passenger and Jackson asked permission ot the passenger to ride out to Three Lamps. Accused then asked witness to drive him to Hobson Street. Then he asked to be driven to various parts of the town. About 4 o’clock witness asked about payment, Jackson stating that ho would get a cheque cashed. Though he tried at several hotels, Jackson always said they could not cash the mysterious cheque. Jackson told witness that he was the foreman of a certain fish shop in Victoria Street. Altogether, the taxi had been engaged for seven hours. Jackson was fined 10s. and ordered to. pay the amount of the taxi hire, and costs. Default was fixed at seven days’ imprisonment and ho was given until August 1 to pay.
