ANCIENT BONES

SAILORS’ DISCOVERY OFF KAWAU There can be no doubt, according : Dr. C. H. Tewsley. that the skeleton discovered recently on an island near i Kawau are very old. Ti e bones which were found in ;• cave by a part} of sailors from H.M.S. Dunedin, while the vessel was on manoeuvres in th* Hauraki Gulf, were handed by the police to Dr. Tewsley. The docta after a hasty examination, is convinced § of the great age of the bones, but hi- t tends making a more thorough investi- j gation later. There were three skeletons found r but little significance was attached to 1 th© discovery, as they were found h k an old Maori burial area. It wv thought likely that the skeletons mishi j be those of three men who were lost i from the scow Kia Ora. about -0 yean | ago.
