BOOKMAKER ARRESTED IN QUEEN STREET “IN A BIG WAY” Described as being a bookmaker in a big way, Stanley Clarke, who was charged with keeping premises as a common gaming house, was fined £75 by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. Clarke, described as an agent, 38 years of age, was arrested by • De-tective-Sergeant McHugh and. Detective Nal’der this morning. "Clarke is in a big way,” said De-tective-Sergeant McHugh. “He has a loom he uses for bookmaking purposes in Queen Street and when we visited his place this morning we found he was taking heavy bets on the Wellington races today.
“He had about 35 bets on hand and an agent rang up while we were present and made about 14 bets. I thought he would never stop.” Clarke had never been charged before. There was no suggestion that he was a “weloher.” and he was n returned soldier, suffering with a bad leg.
“He's pleaded guilty and I'll line him £75,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. who gave Clarke a week to pay.
