THE EVE OF A BIRTHDAY
Here at my casement window I am kneeling In the warm night. The isky above, With golden planets wheeling, Is full of light. A little wind is hiding in the shadows Of bush and tree. And all the leaves are laughing in the knowledge They share with me.
Not very far away there’s someone sleeping. Blue eyes shut tight; A small fair head is lying on. the pillowy, So soft and white. Tomorrow, when the mystic east is flooded With .rose and gold, Ho will—this little blue-eyed, sleeping someone— Bo three years old.
Lord, let A our brightest stars shine down unclouded On him tonight; And let his sleep with happy dreams he crowded To bring delight; And let the wind that creeps 'amopg the shadows Forget to grieve, To sing him lullabies of joy tonight, Lord— His birthday eve!
Hero at my casement Window I am • praying That his life may. Like Yoilr pure sky, be ever broad and lovely—■ Illumined, gay ... I’m praying ’neath the stars, before the dawning, That always ho Will find his birthday like the glad bright morning When ho is three’ —Jean Mclndoe, aged lu.
