ALL PROVINCE COMES TO TOWN COUNTRY WEEK MATCHES Hockey players, both men and women, will come from every corner of the Auckland Province to lake part in the annual Country Week tournament. which begins at Remuera on Monday. The occasions as far as the men are concerned is also called the "White Horse Cup competition, so named after the distilling, firm which gav« the cup. The women will strive for the Auckland Provincial Cup. Seven men’s teams from Wbangan i in the North to Maniapoto in the South will meet during the week. A: present Waii»a holds the men’s trophy and three women’s teams share the lh'ovincia! Cup. They are Rangitaik.. Whangarei and Auckland A. When a draw was made to decide which should take the trophy home. Rangitaiki was the lucky side. The number of women’s teams to play this year constitutes a record, the total being 16. ANNUAL FIXTURE The tournament has been an annual fixture since 1912. except for the war years. In the first years of the men « competition the Northern district* reigned supreme. Between them Hoc - ney and Whangarei carried off the cup at every tournament for seven successive years, the Southern associations almost despairing of ever taking home the trophy. But the South improved* in hockey, and in 1923 Piako carried away the cup to the great rejoicing of all players below Auckland. After that it seemed tiiat nothing could restore the trophy to the North. Waipa holding fast for four years running. Then Rodney came to light and put Waip down, but could not take the cup altogether as Franklin fastened on to half of it. Last year Waipa triumphed The Provincial Cup been more evenly distributed, though Auckland has liad perhaps more than its shar* having won it five times on its own and once in conjunction with Wtinngarei. Waikato and the King Country have each had it twice and Hamilton. I‘aeroa and Rotorua once.
