GREAT RECORD

“WAMPY” BELL COMES TO LIGHT AGAIN

FIRST REP. GAME IN 1918 There have been few more versatile footballers in the history of Rugby football than R. Bell, the brilliant Southlander, who was vice-captain of the Maori team against the British at Wellington on Wednesday. Bell has been longer in rep. football than Mark Nicholls, the “daddy” of the New Zealand team. He played his first rep. game away back about 1918, toured with Parata’s Maori teams in 1922 and 1923, secured All Black honours in the latter year, and was vicecaptain of the Maori team which -went Home in 1926. Last year, “Wampy” bobbed up again as captain of the Southland team which won the Ranfurly Shield. He holds the unique record of having played in every position on the field, from front row to fullback.
