“MANTLE OF ELIJAH”

RIVAL CYCLING BODIES BOTH CLAIM IT! QUAINT WELLINGTON RUMPUS Special to THE SUN * Who controls cycling in the Wellington district? No one seems to know, though two separate organisations lay claim to the honour. Both these bodies call themsalves the Port Nicholson Cycling Club, but one qualifies its authority by putting the mystic letters, N.Z.U.C. after its name, whilo tho other uses tho betterknown N.Z.A.A.A. Tho N.Z.U.C. claims that it has special authority from the Union Cycliste Internationale, which is a world-wide controlling body of considerable standing and importance; but the N.Z-A.A.A-’s claim that this is not so. It states that the real position is that neither body is officially affiliated with the Union Cycliste Internationale, but both have been notified that whichever one eventually becomes properly affiliated must first of all prove that it has control in New Zealand of all professional and amateur cycling. At the present time neither of the New Zealand bodies can lay claim to this, though both are making valiant efforts to secure the necessary control. Upon whom shall the mantle of Elijah fall?

The indications are that an attempt will be made from Wellington to drag Christchurch into the argument. At a meeting of the Wellington Centre of ’he N.ZvA.A.A. this week a circular by the N.Z.U.C. branch was discussed, during which it was stated that Mr. >l. D. London, of Christchurch, was an office-bearer of the N.Z.U.C., but still be had not been debarred from attending a meeting of L he sub-committee of the Canterbury Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. Members of l he Wellington Centre were t remend-ou.-ly upset by this knowledge, and denied to be of the opinion that a serious breach of the constitution had occurred. Anyhow, the Canterbury Centre is to be written to about the Question.
