ABOUT THE JUNIORS
The slushy grounds on Saturday threw many junior teams off the balance! They did not appreciate that the conditions demanded resort to the declining art of dribbling, or to th© more rough-and-ready tactics of short punting and fast following-up. The change after til© surfeit of dryweather football that the clubs have had in competition matches this season found the majority singularly lacking in ability to sidapt their play to the soggy surface and the greasy
ball. Th9re was far too much at tempting of passing rushes.
This was the case in the clash between the unbeaten College Rifles fifteen, and City, in which the dark blues preserved their record only by a potted goal to nil. The Rifles’ fullback, T. Dickey, performed well, handling the slippery ball surely, tackling well and finding touch with long kicks. Veare, at first five-eighth, a clever little attacking player, and Webber, wing-threequarter, who was playing senior football last season, and who infused plenty of dash into his running, were the best of the back division. The team possesses a fine type of forward in Williams, but when he remembers that the first injunction of packmen’s catechism is to keep his head down and hoe in all the time, he will do better. At present he shows just a tendency to scout, which, if unchecked, may develop him into a “shiner.” Gorrow, one of the frontrankers, and Brough in the back row, were the best of the other forwards.
Grafton was lucky to score a threepoint win over Marist. One of the most attractive performers of the Magpie back line is Woon, who last year was a junior representative for Hawke’s Bay, and who, this year, seems to be well in the running for similar honours here. A dashing and tricky runner on attack, Woon also possesses a very sound defence. Fennell, who is back in his old position at centre, and Nicklin in the fiveeighths line, are both showing good form. Townsend, Thodo and Mills are the hardest workers in a keen pack of forwards.
Marist, a rather light team, most of whoso players graduated from last season’s third intermediate fifteen, was at a disadvantage on Saturday, lacking the services of Gabriel, who has proved a most successful hooker this year. Tho team was a man short until near the end of the game. Toy showed up in the loose work in the forwards, while Prendergast, wingthreequarter, performed fairly well on attack.
City displayed plenty of keenness in its game against College Rifles, but was lacking in cohesion. The fullback, Doonin, who, though overshadowed on tho day by Dickey, was fairly sound in his handling and kicked well. In th© five-eighths’ line, Roberts played attractively, while Rocard caught the eye for his work in the forwards.
