OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL
Appreciation of the late Sir Joseph Ward’s long and distinguished public service to the Empire and this Dominion, and deep sympathy with his relatives, was expressed by the Otahuhu Borough Council at the meeting last evening. It was agreed to become a party to the presenting of the Auckland Provincial Water Board Bill before Parliament. A further application was made by Messrs. McCallum Bros, for permission to erect a fish-curing factory on the shores of the Tamaki River. Mr. G. H. Metcalfe, on behalf of the applicants, said that when the previous application had been made, some objection had been raised by residents that the bathing facilities in the river would be interfered with. This had been overcome, as under the amended plan, it was intended to connect the waste pipes from the factory’ with the sewerage system. A further objection was made on the ground of the proximity of the proposed factory to St Mary’s Home. Mr. Metcalfe pointed out that the inmates of the home were entitled to the same, but no more, consideration than other residents of the borough. On the recommendation of the Mayor, it was decided to defer consideration of the application until a report is received from the health inspector and the town-planner. Permission was granted the Community Sunshine Association to take up a collection in Otahuhu on September 12 It was agreed to spend £l5O on permanent work in Albion Lane for the relief of unemployed soldiers in the borough. The Otahuhu Returned Soldiers* Social Club has donated £25 toward the cost of the work, which amount carries a £2 to £1 Government subsidy, and the council has to find £75. The building inspector reported that building permits totalling £153 had been issued during the pas*, fortnight.
