NEW REGENT

TWO BIG TALKIES Echoes of the recent Wall Street catastrophe may be heard in William Haines's newest all-talking picture, “The Girl Said £Co,” which opens today at the New Regent Theatre, and in which the comedian has the role of (i young man who tries to crash the portals of New York’s financial market. Information is that the new picture is a sequel to “Brown of Harvard,*' which first brought Haines into the limelight as one of the screen’s most successful comedians. The dialogue was written by Charles McArthur, coauthor of the dramatic hit, “The Front Page,” and comedy interpolations were supplied by Robert Hopkins. Prominent in Haines’s supporting cast are Leila Hyams, who played opposite him in “Alias Jimmy Valentine,’* the well-known comedy pair of Marie Dressier and Polly Moran, Francis X. Bushman, jun., who continues the role of Haines’s Nemesis which he created in "Brown of Harvard,” Clara Blandick, William V. Mong, Junior Coghlan, and Phyllis Crane.

The new Haines picture depicts the comedian facing business life, and is said to be a cross-section of the experience of almost every young man in America first starting “on his own.” He has to accept the responsibility of the family when his father dies; he faces keen competition, and learns how to work the strings in business life; and then fights for the girl he loves. The sporting youth turns into a battling business man. The picture was directed by Sam Wood, whose most recent productions were “So This is College,” and the Duncan Sisters* talking debut, “It’s a Great Life.”

A new Path© dialogue picture, starring Ann Harding, eminent stage star, entitled “Her Private Affair,” will be the second big attraction tonight. It is one of the most dramatic pictures produced this season, and affords Miss Harding excellent opportunities for effective work, of which she takes full advantage. Harry Bannister, leading rrian, shares honours with the star. The cast, among the players being John Loder, Kay Hammond, Arthur - Hoyt, William Orlamond, and Lawford Davidson, was in every respect high grade. The picture was produced by Paul Stein.
