TRUE BLOOD'S WIN
MERITORIOUS EFFORT IN PARLIAMENTARY STAGHUNTER’S SURPRISE Special to THE SUX WELLINGTON, Thursday. Miserable weather was experienced for the second day of the Wellington winter meeting, conditions being bad, with frequent showers. Nevertheless, the attendance was good for an off day. The course cut up considerably after . the first race. The sole Auckland success today was that achieved by Mr. Wenzl Scholium’s good horse, True Blood, who last month won the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap. He gave all but one horse a start in the Parliamentary Handicap and beat them home in such style that he may take some beating off again tomorrow if he goes to the post. A notable Auckland failure was Luminary, who was backed for the Highweight as if it was all over. The Waikato gelding was always in second place, but stopped to a walk at the home turn and finished last. The big race on Saturday, the Winter Hurdles, is regarded as next to being a certainty for King’s Jest, who has improved considerably since racing at Ellerslie last month. Tb© totalisator today handled £35,572, against £41,080 on the corresponding day last year. Corunna Hurdles The Corunna Hurdles saw spirited betting betwen Avro and Mountain Guide, the former being actual first choice. Deluge led along the straight and over the second fence from Makeup. Avro, Dobbin, Daylight, Mountain Guide, Paris, and Opa. the field soon stringing out. Along the back Deluge and Avro were forcing the pace from Makeup and Mountain Guide. these being at good intervals. Avro was first into the straight from Makeup. Deluge, and Mountain Guide. There was little at the last fence between Avro, Makeup, Mountain Guide, and Paris, but Mountain Guide fell when looking a possibility. Avro then went on to win by three lengths from Makeup. with Paris four lengths back. Deluge was fourth, and Daylight and Opa followed. Avro jumped very badly at the last two hurdles but had too pace on the flat. He. was ridden hard over the last furlong. Make Up, for a first attempt over obstacles, shaped very promisingly; indeed, he was weil handled by R. Syme. Paris fenced a bit better and was finishing on after being a long way back over the first mile. Deluge showed a lot of pace and stopped quickly. Mountain Guide was well back over the first half, but made up his ground down the back and was going great guns a length and a-half behind Avro and Make Up at the last fence. Here he blundered and fell heavily. Trial Plate Arisus was a well-backed fancy In the Trial Plate, but he got badly loft at the start. The favourite, Coon Song, was always in front, being attended over the early part by Intruder, and Prince Desmond. On to the course proper Coon Song, Vandyke, and TerraFirma were almost in line, with Jayson. Rosshire, and Win Acre following. Coon Song shook off his opponents in the run home to win by two and a-half lengths from Rosshire, the Takanini youngster, who was paying over a score to win. Jayson and Terra Firma were together three lengths back, and then came Winacre, Vandyke, Dunraven, and Prince Desmond. Coon Song was at a good price for a favourite, and he had too much pace for the youngsters. He is good enough to win open sprints. Rosshire finished on well and looks like developing into a first-class three-year-old. Both Jayson and Terra Firma wort; always in the picture and Vandyke. Dunraven and Prince Desmond shaped promisingly. Seatoun Handicap Town Major and Snow Prince were well backed in the Seatoun Handicap. Brilliant Light led out from Snow Prince, Singer, Semper Paratus, The Warden, Malahat, Pedestal and Town Major. Crossing the top Snow Prince was in charge from Semper Paratus and they turned for home together ahead of Tahoma, Town Major and Singer. In the run home, Town Major came through to beat Tahoma by two lengths, while there were three lengths back to Malahat. The Warden was fourth and Brilliant Light, Disrank. Lucretia, Singer and Pedestal followed. Snow Prince stopped badly. Nothing had a chance with the winner, who revelled in the conditions. Tahoma went an improved race and Malahat was always prominent. The Warden was finishing on. Snow Prince was bowling along easily at the turn and then compounded, as also did Semper Paratus. The early pacemaker, Brilliant Light, will do better when he strikes a dry track. Mariri Hack Steeples Hymcstrason again won the Hack Steeplechase, outjumping the opposition and scoring conveniently after being anything but well ridden. Corneroff, Waitaunaha and Sir Moment were always near the front over the first round, but crossing the top Hymestrason moved up and hit the front, going on to win very easily by a length
and a-half from Corneroff, whose jumping could be improved. Sir Moment, who nearly lost his riderthree fences from home, was two lengths away third, with Taramoa and Waitaunaha well back. Hymestrason gave a magnificent display of lepping and at the last three fences went right away. Corneroffs Pace enabled him to gain some of this lost ground, but he jumped extravagantly. Sir Moment might have been second had he not blundered so badly half a mile from home. ' High Heath©** baulked twice and was not persevei-cd with. Parliamentary Handicap True Blood was seen at bis best * the Parliamentary ... ..... . which he won alter a meritorious performance. There was big money for High Pitch, True Blood, Medip and Best Friend,
the rest being at fancy prices. At the start Marjoram was badly left and True Blood and Black Duke also lost some ground. Blimp made play round, the bend out. of the straight, being followed by Black Mint, High Pitch, Best Friend, Balloon, Taboo. Down the back Taboo (pulling hard) hit the front just ahead of Blimp, True Blood, Best Friend, Black Duke, Black Mint, Mendip and High Pitch, tho field bunching in close order at the five, less than four lengths covering tho lot. Crossing the top True Blood held a lead of half a length and he was actually first into the straight, closely attended by Mendip, Taboo. Black Duke, Black Mint. Blimp, Best Friend, Balloon and High Pitch. At the false rail True Blood was still in charge, but from this out ho was hotly pressed by Mendip, while later on Black Duke put in an appearance, and Blimp and High Pitch were putting in some good work. In a rattling finish True Blood hung - on well and defeated Mendip by nearly a length, wbilo Black Duke was another length back, just in front of Blimp and High Pitch. Next home were Taboo. Best Friend, Marjoram, Balloon and Black Mint. The result just showed how unlucky True Blood was in not getting a run on Tuesday, when he was left at the post. If started again on Saturday he will bo a possibility, for be is a great horse under winter conditions. Mendip should be improved by thq race and Black Duke was a bit unlucky in the running. Blimp might have troubled the winner had he not lost his position on tho home turn, and High Pitch could not put in his usual dash at the finish. Best Friend disappointed, for he was done with at the end of a mile. High-weight Handicap Luminary was a very hot favourite for the High-weight, but he cracked up badly after going a mile and finished last. Mount Shannon was a good second choice and he scored easily, giving Ellis his first winning ride at tho meeting. Troilus and Luminary made all the early running, being followed out of the straight by Carinthia, The Sun, Courageous, Prince Lu and Mount Shannon. The two in front were followed past the six by The Sun, Mount Shanon, Carinthia., Prince Lu and Courageous, and on the home turn the leaders had both had enough. Mount Shannon was in front appoaching the false rail and he won easily by six lengths from Courageous, with Fin© Acre four lengths back, just in front of The Sun. Next to finish were Carinthia, Troilus and Prince Lu. The winner outclassed his field and Courageous was an easy second best. Fine Acre was a bit unlucky. Member*’ Handicap Hopwood. Havering and Paiko were heavily backed in the Members’ Handicap, but there was a genuine surprise in store, Stagliunter winning at solid double figures. Havering, who drew
tire extreme outside, began like a hurricane and inside a furlong was over on the rails, leading Paiko. Coming on to the course proper Paiko and Havering were just in front of Hopwood, Staghunter, Marble King and Rascal. Once past the false rail Havering and Staghunter drew out from Hopwood. but the latter -made a great effort in a stirring, finish. Staghunter touched off Haveripg by half a head, while Hopwood was half a length back. Then a couple of lengths away was Paiko. with RaScal, Lady’*? Boy, Marble King, Chopin and - -Rational IT. next in order. Staghunter.finished very gamely and Havering, too. hung on grimly. His early speed Y r as a. revelation. Hopwood had to change his ground near- ! ing the post, otherwise he might have won outright. Paiko stopped at the end. but Lady's Boy and Marble King are likely to show improvement soon. Paleta needed the race. Petonc Handicap The easy win scored by Coon Song in the Trial Plate pointed strongly to Portray in the Petone Handicap, and he was made the hottest favourite of the meeting - , while Glenrossie was also heavily backed in what was a very poor field for a metropolitan course. The favourite and Abbey Queen were first to become prominent, with White Doe and Hurly Burly. On to the course proper the order was Portray, Abbey Queen, White Doe, Killigrew and Glenrossie. and from this to the finish it was a one-horse race. Portray winning by a couple of lengths from Abbey Queen, who gave a return half as big again as the winner. Killigrew was clear a length away, a head ;n front of Glenrossie. The latter was unable to handle the going. Next home were White Doe and Hurly Burly. Portray is in great form and may win again soon.
