REFINED SUGAR
IMPORTATION FROM AMERICA
LOCAL PRICE NOT AFFECTED
Several hundred tons of refined sugar have been imported from America during the last few months, but whether importations will continue it is difficult to say. Locally refined sugar bus been reduced in price, but only in conformity with prices abroad. It is understood that importations have not affected the local reductions in any way.
In this respect New Zealand has a great advantage over Australia. Raw sugar imported into the Commonwealth is subject to a comparatively heavy duty, in order to protect the Queensland-grown cane. Xew Zealand is more fortunate in that raw sugar is not heavily raxed, and consequently the refined article is much cheaper here than in Australia. Nor is the duty on imported refined sugar very heavy. It has been suggested in some quarters that the duty on this commodity may he increased ill the Prime Minister's Budget, to be presented to Parliament, but inquiries made in the city this morning do not confirm this suggestion. Neill. Cropper, and Co., the importers of the refined sugar, pbrainec their supplies at a time when there was a comparative shortage. They cannot state whether the importations will continue.
Raw sugar for refining purposes is imported from the West Indies. Peru, and Java, in addition to the large quantities which come from Fiji.
