In the Market Place

POOR FRUIT IMPORTS AUSTRALIAN SHIPMENT Recent heavy rains and floods in Australia have resulted in the condition of most mandarins which arrived in Auckland during the week being very indifferent. In auctions at the City Markets the price fell as low as 4s a case owing to condition, the better fruit realising up to 12s. Passions were also of poor quality, but prices were fair for the pines, oranges, lemons and grapes included in the Australian shipment. Delicious apples have shown a slight improvement in value during the past week, but pears are still dull of sale. Hothouse tomatoes were slightly better in price than last week. There was a fair demand for oranges, and bananas were a little cheaper. There were no changes in other lines. There was no change in the price of eggs of the four main grades, the demand remaining good with moderate supplies. Farmers’ butter, however showed an all-round decrease of one penny a pound. Cabbage, cauliflower and celery again over-supplied the market. There was a fair demand for all vegetables in season, which were in good supply. At today’s auction of poultry, supplies were good and prices well up to the level of recent sales. The demand for well-finished young cockerels was very strong and values firm. Good quality liens of all breeds were eagerly sought after with prices showing a slight increase. Ducks and drakes were offered freely. Very few were well done, and these kept values down.
