ANCIENT BONES

SAILORS’ DISCOVERY OFF KAWAU

OPINION OF DOCTOR There can be no doubt, according to Dr. C. H. Tewslcy, that the skeletons discovered recently on an island ne*u* Kawau are very old. The bones, which were found in a cave by a party of sailors from H.M.S. Dunedin, while the vessel was on manoeuvres in the Hauraki Gulf, were handed by the polio© to Dr. Tewsley. The doctor, after a hasty examination, is convinced of the great age of the bones, but intends making a more thorough investigation later. There were three skeletons found, but little significance was attached to the discovery, as they were found in an old Maori burial area. It was thought likely that the skeletons might be those of three men who were lost from the scow Kia Ora. about 20 years
