FEES OF DIRECTORS
APPEAL AGAINST TAX ASSESSMENT COMPANY IN COURT Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The Appeal Court today is hearing the case of Aspro, Limited, versus the Commissioner of Taxes, _ an appeal against the 'assessment of income by the latter. For the appellant Mr. A. Gray, K.C., is appearing, and Mr. C. G. White is representing the respondent, the Solicitor-General. Mr. Gray asked the court to make an order that the facts of the case should not be published. The court said it had no power to do so, but the Chief Justice stated that it was undesirable to publish the figures, which were of a private nature. Application was also made to suppress the name, but again the Chief Justice said the court had no power to do so, and it must be left to the discretion of the Press.
The court then proceeded to hear the argument in the case, which is concerned principally with the question of directors’ fees. The company had appealed agaipst its tax assessment, and Mr. E. Page. S.M.. in December, 1929, held it should stand, on the ground that tae allowance made by the company to the directors was excessive. The company again appealed from this decision, and the case was removed by the order of Sir Michael Myers into the Court of Appeal for argument.
