JONES AND COX LEAD IN U.S.A. CHAMPIONSHIP BEAT BOGEY BY ONE

Reed. 12.25 p.m. NEW YORK, Thurs. In the open golf championship, at Interlachen, Minnesoto, under a broiling sun and in a temperature reaching 100 degrees, Bobby Jones went out in 34 and back in 37, and W. Cox, with exactly the same scores, tied with him. They are leading the field of 142 players. Horton Smith took par 36 both ways, tying with George Smith and Harry Cooper, who had scores of 72. Others were: Irwin and Ottoman, 73; John Goodman, McFarlane, 64; Melhorn, 76; Tolley and Von Elm, 80; Varden, 81. Tolley is the only overseas’ challenger. Five thousand spectators cheered Jones, who missed half a* dozen putts by Inches. There was keen excitement as Jones and Horton Smith battled stroke for stroke on the inward journey. Jones was a stroke behind with two to go, but on each of these Horton Smith lost.

Goodman, who knocked Jones out of the national championship last year, thrilled the crowd by going out in 33, but he returned in 41. Goodman was flustered by the thousands who turned to watch him after trooping home with Jones.
