RELIEF WORKERS
KING COUNTRY ROADS BENEFIT MILLS DISCHARGING MEN From Our Own 'Correspondent 0 TAUMARUNUI, Tuesday. The unemployment problem has not been an unmixed evil so far as the King Country is concerned. The Public Works Department’s efforts to find work for large numbers of men have resulted in a great deal of urgent roading work being carried out in the district, which would probably not have been commenced otherwise for some considerable time. A large proportion o£ the men now at work are drafted in from the Auckland district. This has given rise to a certain amount of dissatisfaction, as it is maintained in some quarters that King Country workers seeking employment cannot obtain it. There were over 50 men registered at the Taumarunui bureau this week awaiting work. Against this attitude it is pointed out for the department that every effort is made to place men who are willing to accept what is offering. Another and rather disquieting aspect of the labour problem is that while so many men are being drafted in from other centres, most of the timber mills in the district are putting men off owing to the ever-growing slump in the timber trade. Some of the biggest mills have still further cut down their staffs in the past few days, and these men will have to find other jobs.
