POTATO MARKET QUIET
POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The oats market is quiet and values are a little easier. A grade Gartons from the South aro quoted at 3s 9id to 3s lOd, f.0.b., s.i., for prompt delivery, and for July-August-September at 3s 10Jd to 3s lid. A few sales are being effected. B grade are worth 3s 8d for prompt delivery and 3s 9d for spread delivery, with the market quiet. There is a very unusual scarcity of Algerians this season and at present they are practically unprocurable. Local merchants are negotiating with Australia to secure seed to cover their requirements. Business is being attempted in this regard at 5s Sd to 5s 9d, c.i.f., duty paid. The chaff market is steadier than for some time and today sales have been made at £6 17s Gd to £7, f.0.b., s.i., for prompt delivery. This is equivalent to £ 5 "7s 6d to £ 5 10s a ton on trucks. The potato market is quiet. Growers are still inclined to hold supplies. The price to growers remains at £4 a ton, on trucks. The Wingatui sailed today for Auckland with a much smaller quantity than was at first anticipated. Her cargo includes 2,828 sacks from Timaru and 1,990 sacks from Lyttelton. The latter figure includes 400 to 500 sacks of seed. The Katoa is due to sail from Lyttelton tomorrow, but it is not expected that she will carry a large quantity. For the Wingatui shipment the price paid was 955, f.0.b., s.i. The quantities in store at Lyttelton are being reduced. The forward position is easier. Today’s quotations are £5 a ton, f.0.b., s.i., for July, and £5 32s 6cT for August-September. The onion market is quiet. The nominal price to growers is £ 210 s to £3 a ton, on trucks. Advice from Wellington is to the effect that consignments of onions from Melbourne were landed by the Maheno on July 4.
Offerings of wheat have slackened off, as nearly all the wheat has been threshed and delivered. The few offerings are realising 5s lid a bushel, on trucks. Fowl wheat remains firm at Gs, f.0.b., s.i., with the demand good.
