Matthews and Hook

AIRMEN MISSINCx IN INDIA LAST SEEN LOW OVER THICK JUNGLE FEARS are entertained in Rangoon that Janies Matthews and Erie Hook, the missing airmen, will not be found alive. When last observed the machine in which they wcr ■ making for Australia was low, and apparently in difficulties, over an impenetrable jungle.

United P.A.—By Telegraph Cgpyrigh Reed. 10.55 a.m. RANGOON, Mon. The latest message about Hook anc Matthews, who have disappearec while flying to Rangoon on their waj to Australia, states the airplane was seen on the morning of Thursday lasl over a village about 10 miles north ol Toungup. rt was flying low and was appar ently in difficulties. The chances of the airmen being alive are remote if the a i rplaii' crashed in this locality, as it is ar impenetrable jungle. A message from Delhi says an in tensive seai-ch is being made along the coast between Kyaukpvu. 8C miles south of Akyab, and Bassein foi

Matthews and Hook, who were last seen over Kyaukpyu heading out to sea. It is feared that the airmen have fallen into the ocean as the weather at the time they were seen was stormy and the visibility was poor. The captains of vessels in the vicinity have been asked to keep a sharp lookout for any trace of the missing men. The region between Akyab and Rangoon is where Sir Alan Cobham and Miss Amy Johnson met most terrible weather. Sir Alan was forced to alight on the sea and Miss Johnson had to turn back in order to obtain sufficient altitude to cross the mountains into which she narrowly escaped crashing.
