Once the police had to charge a mob with drawn sabres, but they could not prevent the sacking of shops and houses. A tobacconist and his son were nearly beaten to death and vengeance was wreaked on girls and women who had associated with the French in the occupation period. One girl was badly mauled and her clothes torn to tatters. Mainz is now quiet, but the police had to draw a cordon around the f entre of the town and stop the traffic in order to check wreckers and looters.
