lace will fashion OUR FORMAL FROCKS THIS COMING SUMMER

It is iuterestiog to hear that lace is again to be “correct” this season. We have proved Its worth as a good stand-by, and it is nice to be assured that so useful a material is to have further success. At • show recently, lace was considered important enough to have a whole section of the parade devoted to it- There were neat suits, with short cardigan coats, tuck-in blouses, and flared skirts just above anklelength. The suits were Intended to be worn at any smart afternoon function—when viewing a tennis tournament, taking tea on the baleonv of a chic hotel, attending an after-the-wedding At Home, and so on. Black, navy-blye, and cocoa-brown were the prevailing tones, and most of the blouses had long sleeves, though some ;,ad the new full just-above-the-eblow ones. RACE GOWNS For the summer race meetings and tor garden parties, a finer kind of lac.e is chosen. The colours are more pastel, and rich soft "summer” fur is used as trimming. The frock of an ensemble like this usually has short sleeves and a slight decolletage. for then it is possible to attend a dance later on. It is quite the thing also to carry a set of jewels to put on in the evening. The frock of a simple ensemble in clear pink-beige lace had a round neck-line in front and a slight V opening at. the back. The coat was i little longer than txsual. and had a band of foxaiine dyed to match round the hem: a cape, divided down the back and hanging in a pretty graceful fashion, gave a new line to this coat, which was equally suitable for wear!

on the racecourse and in the smart restaurant. CORAL AND DIAMENTE lu one jewel set that was fitted into a lovelj" little case iu readiness for the dance in town after the day on the course, there was a necklace of large carved pink coral beads, with diamente rondels iu between. It was not. a tight choker necklace, but one that just took the curve of the neck. There were two bracelets each consisting of two rows of the coral and diamente, threaded on fine elastic so that they kept between wrist and elbow. And there were long pearshaped pieces of coral, also beautifully carved, slung on fine chains of little diamonds, for use as earrings. You can imagine how this lovely set enhanced the clear, soft pink of the pretty lace frock which was worn with a pair of long suede gloves to exactly match. MORE EVENING LACE The frock just described was, of course, a kind of “make-shift,” but the full evening gown. for formal times, is of a different type. One for which Calais lace, very fine and silky, was used, the pattern being of roses and delicate leaves. The colour was fairy-like greeu, and the gown was mounted over fine silk net in the same shade. Each little leaf and flower was appltqued with small stitches, and occasionally the lace was cut away to show the clear net beneath. The skirt was long at the back, trailing a little on the floor, but it cleared the insteps iu front. The bodice was made with a deep bolero which hung from the shoulder straps like a berthe, and was entirely of lace. The wrap to go over the whole was a short cloak of lace, lined with pleated chiffon. Finest black lace, with silk tulle, is a great favourite for evening gowns. It always looks cool, never dowdy or dated, and now that the shoulder trails of white, pale pink, or deep red camelias have returned, one could not make a better choice.
